Romancing the Stone

Brent and I are having a bit of an argument.

He thinks that, when he's in excruciating pain from a kidney stone, I should somehow whip out some amazing supernatural driving skills and fly through traffic a bad "Starksy and Hutch" car chase scene.

I, on the other hand, think it would be very bad for us to get in an accident and possibly kill ourselves (or someone else), while I'm trying to rush him to the Emergency Room.  I keep picturing myself arrested and telling the judge, "But Your Honor, my husband had a KIDNEY STONE."  I don't think it would help me avoid time in the slammer.

Do I break traffic laws while we're going to the ER?

You betcha!

Do I use the emergency shoulder lane to pass all the cars waiting in line to turn at the light and weave my very large Dodge Magnum through traffic like a fighter pilot dodging (no pun intended) enemy fire?

No. No, I do not.

Why?

Because, my friends, I suck at driving.  I admit it.  I hate it.  I've been in an accident... or two.  Possibly three - but I wasn't driving for the third one.  I would much, much rather not do it at all.  To the point that I'll put off errands of any type to avoid driving.

Two adults with no kids at home can go a LONG time between runs to the grocery store, by the way.

I drive a good distance to work every day so I'm kind of numb to it now but I really hate it.  The very sound of a road trip makes me want to cough up a hairball.  There's nothing appealing to me about long periods of time behind the wheel - no matter the destination.

So, needless to say, both times that I had to run Brent to the ER yesterday there were some... firm words... exchanged between us.

This stone is a "little" one, compared to some in the past.  I really pray he can pass it without surgical intervention like the last few.

Sorry that you're hurting, Brent.  And I'm sorry I suck at driving.  But at least we're all alive.

Nathan, by the way, was VERY patient with us and all the hours spent at the hospital yesterday.  He did tell me multiple times that we were "All Done" but he really did pretty well for a 2 yr old that has no idea what's going on or why Mom doesn't want him to run in this beautiful, wide open hallways that echo.  Thank you for being a good kid, Nathan.

Oooh! I've had a kidney stone, and in my experience it does qualify for fighter pilot driving. LOL.

Sorry to hear that he's dealing with that! Hope it passes soon!

Hi Lori,

I found your blog through Babes In Hairland and I admit it I have become hooked mainly because it was so nice to see you finally get Nate. I have had kidney stones since I was 17 (35 now). Every other year. I have had surgery, passed some, had stents put up, you name it I have had it. So, I know the pain Brent is going through. However, I also know how miserable I can be and I often take it out on my husband who is a pretty laid back person. So this is a get well message to Brent and to you. Hang in there we know what an ordeal this can be for the whole family. BTW I think it is awesome you stayed at the hospital with him. My husband can't stand hospitals, he is a bit of a germphobic so he often would drop me off (using our kids as an excuse) then my mom would come and get me. Plus when you go as I did it does get old. So, Lori you are doing great!!

I think staying alive is very important Lori. Anthonie passed two large kidney stones about the same time as Brent. I was in tears I tell ya. Bless your heart Brent! You really need a break! Bless your heart Lori for keeping your family safe and Bless little Nathan's heart for being so wonderful at the boring hospital.:) He is such a sweet boy. I am so gald that the three of you are together.

I am a lurker, and found you through other adoption blogs. I hope you don't mind me giving my two cents about kidney stones. Some in our family have suffered from these and we have actually found a great cure that I thought I would pass along. You can buy a Daikon Raddish at most grocery stores (it is long and white, a little bigger than a potato). Put the raddish in a juicer and drink the juice. The kidney stone(s) will be gone, GONE in 24 hours. The key is to get the juice down as it is somewhat strong and most people are nauseous from the pain. In our family, most people can feel a twinge and know a stone is coming on and they hurry and drink the juice before they reach the nauseous point. I have never met anyone that this did not work for, except those who are stubborn and refuse to try it! Good luck!

I had to chuckle at your post title. How perfect. You sound nice and sane like Danny. Though the last time I was having labor pains I may have threatened him into speeding to the hospital. He would always say, "If we get pulled over by the cops, that's just going to take longer." But I always reminded him, "Then they'll see how fetching huge my belly is and escort us there with lights flashing." He never bought it. He took the beating and drove the speed limit.

I hope Brent passes them quickly and without pain-- if that's possible. He is the third person I've heard about this week with kidney stones.
