Fundraising Ideas

My friend's brother's wife ('s cousin's uncle's neighbor...??) writes a blog that gets traffic. She's using the "Coin for Comments" idea to donate 5 cents to Hope for Little Angels of Haiti for every person that comments on this post

http://babesinhairland.blogspot.com/2010/01/coins-for-comments.html

Thanks for the great idea, Becky. Things work better when we all do the best we can with what we have where we are. Thank you for your support of our babies.

What can I do to help?

This is a very common question we hear spoken and I am sure it is thought much more frequently than expressed.

We have a few ideas!

1 - Contact your government representatives and implore them to encourage the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security to grant Humanitarian Parole to those children in the adoption process. This may be a small amount of the impacted people but it saves lives that are generally overlooked.

2 - Donate. Any amount helps! The original goals and timeline of our organization will now have to be fast tracked and expanded. It is estimated that the number of orphans in Haiti will TRIPLE due to this catastrophe.

3 - Spread the word. Please let others know.

4 - Talk to your employer about donating.

5 - Donate blood to the Red Cross. I am sure that this emergency will seriously deplete any reserves.

6 - Donate supplies to emergency relief organizations (i.e. personal care items, medical supplies, blankets, etc.)

7 - Don't forget. The rebuilding process in Haiti will take years and unfortunately our memories tend to last only moments.

Thank You to Loralee for Posting about Us and the O

http://loraleeslooneytunes.com/2010/01/16/putting-a-face-on-the-tragedy-in-haiti-please-help-any-way-you-can/

Copied from Loralee's blog. Loralee is mostly famous. As her brother, and my dear friend, Rhett said, "She's even been invited to the White House to oogle Michelle Obama's fabulous arms."

This is her post, calling for all her blog readers to find a way to help the situation in Haiti.

Putting a face on the tragedy in Haiti. Please help ANY way you can.

Imagine if your children were a half a world away without you.

That would be horrible, wouldn’t it?

Now imagine if you learned that a devastating earthquake hit the country and the epicenter was right next to the orphanage where your much loved and wanted babies lived. What if you didn’t know if they were hurt or even alive? What if you knew that if they made it through the earth quake they would have no food. No shelter. No water. No clothing, blankets, medical supplies?

There is NOTHING worse then the desperate feeling you get as a parent on behalf of your children that are in need and if your hands are tied and you are unable to physically get to your babies to protect and shield them the feeling is devastating. Nobody knows that feeling right now more then our family friends, Lori and Brent Rosenlof.

They have been trying to adopt two precious little ones from Haiti.

Meet Jessica and Nathan:

Lori and Brent have been trying to get Nathan and Jessica home with them for a long time. They may not have the papers yet but these two are every inch their children in every way that matters. Adopting from Haiti is a very long and complicated process full of red tape and a lot of frustration and heart ache. With the recent tragedy there it is now full of more red tape and more heartbreak then any human should have to experience.

Things are CRITICAL in that country…especially for Lori and Brett’s little children and the orphanage they live in.

I am helping them try to spread the word in hopes that people looking for a more specific cause to donate to Haiti will PLEASE consider helping the orphanage my friends are adopting from. Their situation is CRITICAL.

Information has been difficult to get but this is what they know so far in an email that I received from Lori. I will quote her so that it comes straight from the horse’s mouth:

“We have heard mixed reports about where our children are and their status (I really mean “safety” but that word tears at my heart too much). We believe that they are literally living the street in Carrefour (earthquake epicenter) with Nadia (orphanage director) right now. They have no supplies at the moment. People can’t live long without water, particularly in 91 degree temps (in the shade).

We have found someone flying to Haiti tomorrow (please literally pray the FAA lets their flight leave – it’s already been delayed a day) and they are taking cash from the HLAH nonprofit to give to the people on the ground there and they are going to help us get money to Nadia. We have heard that there are supplies available “for a price” and that the costs are astronomical.

We believe the orphanage itself was leveled.

Our daughter, Jessica, we know was not at the orphanage and we’re praying that they can find her and 2 other children that were also known to be at other locations when the quake hit. Our son, Nathan should be wherever the other children are.

100% of ALL funds go directly to the children. The people that run the non profit organization all volunteer so there aren’t any administrative costs. We are sending money now (and obviously in the coming weeks) for supplies, but then we’re going to have to rebuild.”

I normally do not rally for donations, I know that there are scummy people scamming those online, but this is different. I can vouch for these people absolutely and I am just sick, sick, SICK with worry for these little children. I am worried for EVERYONE in Haiti but it is even harder when you have knowledge of a specific individual’s pain.

The plight of these little ones keeps me up at night and I worry for them so.

SO…I am asking you to help in any way you can. Donate, comment, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE spread the word on your blogs, Twitter, Facebook, ANYTHING.

PLEASE.

Here is all the information that you need. The orphanage is called HOPE FOR LITTLE ANGELS OF HAITI. They have a Facebook page and a cause page as well. There is a Facebook Causes Button on our FB Cause page. And most importantly, there is a Paypal DONATE button on the Rosenlof’s blog for supplies for the orphanage.

And if you can do nothing else, please go over and leave a comment of support on their blog and say a prayer for the safety of their children.

You are amazing and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for ANYTHING you can do.

Update on Getting Funds to Haiti from HLAH and Wasatch Adoptions

Dear Hope Families,

I wanted to share some good news with you today, I believe we need it right now to boost our spirits. First let me say that things are going well with negotiations with US and Haitian governments to bring your children home. Everyone involved wants the outcome to be good and is looking out for the best interest of the children.

As you know we have confirmation that Harry is in an LDS church in PetionVille, all the children living in the orphanage (a branch of the Foyer de Sion orphanage) with him were evacuated safely. The mounting concerns now are that PetionVille is in the mountains and it has been difficult to get aid to them. Harry said that there is food to purchase and even gas for his truck, but he has no money. And because PetionVille is in the mountains it has been difficult for rescue teams to get to them. Harry says that if he could get some gas in his car he could try to find Nadia and the foster kids. He would also be able to buy food and supplies, there is some available to purchase (although the prices are astronomical) but the banks are shut down and there is no way to get money.

I am happy to tell you that we have found a way to get money to Harry! We have a friend (via Shannon Cox, haitianroots.com) who will be traveling to Haiti tomorrow with a special medical team put together by the LDS church. Dr. Jeremy Booth has agreed to take the money to Harry. He is an ER doctor, speaks fluent Creole and loves the Haitian people. They have been trying to fly out for several days but because of flight restrictions but hope to fly out tomorrow.

The Hope for the Little Angels Team is out getting a substantial amount of cash right now to send with Dr. Booth. I know this money will be critical in helping to find and feed our children. I want to tell each of you thank you, it is because of so many of you and your contributions that the Hope organization has funds to send down.

I will keep you posted, please pray that Dr. Booth is able to reach Harry with the funds!!

Your friend,

Chareyl
(Wasatch Adoptions)

Update from Our Friends at Haitian Roots

Dear Friends,

We have been in contact with one of our coordinators, Harry Mardy, via e-mail. He and his family are taking shelter at the LDS ward building in Petion-ville. The church and grounds are packed with people, including the orphans from his orphanage, and, most likely, several of our Haitian Roots children. We have several children who live right in that area and are likely seeking refuge at the church. Petion-ville was hit VERY hard and, because it is in the more mountainous area and the roads are all blocked, has not been able to receive any aid. Harry says they are running out of food and that they are going to start losing people within the next 24 hours. Many of them are starting to get sick, as well. This is especially heartbreaking to me because there was nothing we could do about the earthquake happening but these people have survived and are fine but will die from things that could be easily prevented. If you are the praying sort, we ask that you please pray specifically that aid will be able to get to Petion-ville.

One specific way that we have planned for aid to get to them is through one of our donors, Dr. Jeremy Booth. He is an ER doctor, speaks fluent Creole, loves the Haitian people, and is set to travel to Haiti with a special medical team put together by the LDS church. The team was supposed to fly to Haiti today but have been delayed because of flight restrictions. They hope to fly tomorrow but have been told it may be as late as Monday or Tuesday. Not only is this disturbing because of the immediate needs in Haiti, but the team is losing doctors with each day that passes (due to scheduling difficulties). Harry said that food is available to purchase (although the prices are astronomical) but they don’t have any money and the banks are all shutdown. Dr. Booth is willing to take funds down (and they are available with help from our friends www.hopeforlittleangelsofhaiti.org ) to get to Harry.

So, at this time we would aks you to specifically pray for our loved ones in Petion-ville, that roads can be cleared and that they can receive aid. Also, please pray that Dr. Booth will be able to travel tomorrow so that he and his team can help with this aid.

Thank you all for your continued support. Thank you to those of you who have donated to Haitian Roots and to any other aid organization working in Haiti. We are so grateful that Haiti is receiving worldwide attention and response. If you feel inclined to donate through Haitian Roots, we will use every penny of your donation to help ease the suffering in Haiti. You can donate through our website: www.haitianroots.com.

Thank you.

Touching

There have been a lot of tears today, but not for the reasons you might think.

My brother, Brian and his wife called us last night to tell us that they're expecting in December! Very exciting news - they're such a cute couple together and I think they've been good for each other. I know they've both wanted this a long time and I'm thrilled for them. They'll be awesome parents.

My baby sister is getting closer to her due date. Baby Rocco is due while we're in Haiti and I'm sad that we might not be right there for the birth, but we'll be swooping in to shower him in hugs and kisses as soon as we're back home. Interestingly, Rocco is the first biological nephew on either side of the family for us. Maybe Brian and Paige will have a little boy as well.

The big tears came this evening as I was getting some Etsy orders ready to ship. A very sweet woman from Brent's work crocheted two beautiful baby afghans for us to sell on the store. I was packaging the sweet pink one today to ship it off to the buyer in WV, when I noticed that she'd sent me a note on the order. Tears came to my eyes as I read these words:

This blanket is a gift for a baby, due in September, who is not likely to live long after birth due to a terminal congenital condition. Although her parents have baby clothes and blankets that belonged to their two older children, they want this baby to have clothes and a blanket of her very own. I offered to buy any Etsy baby blanket they wanted for $30 or less, and the mother chose this one.

Thank you for making and selling this blanket, which will help the family during this difficult time. They're still trying to decide on names. In the meantime the baby is known as "Angel".

It's amazing how we touch each other. We never know when we're going to be just what someone - even a total stranger across the country - might need to hear.

Tomorrow we're having the big yard sale at the sports arena in SLC and then my sweet neighbor has put together one in my very own neighborhood - all to support these babies in Haiti.

21 days until we're there again. 21 days until I kiss their sweet cheeks.

But I can be grateful they're alive, well and healthy today. Thank you to sweet Angel for reminding me that I have been richly blessed.

Jewelry Show Updates

At my last job I traveled a fair amount. I spent two months in Singapore. I've been to Ireland, the Netherlands and all over this great country. I started looking for a piece of jewelry on some of my longer trips. I looked for something unique and something that I loved. I'm not one to "invest" in something like that - I'm a pretty frugal shopper - but I like having something that reminds me of that country every time I wear it.

I hope everyone who ordered (or will be ordering) from our lia sophia fundraiser has that same experience. I hope they associate that piece of jewelry with these fabulous kids and our sweet little orphanage. I hope they recognize that they've done a good thing.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who supported our lia sophia fundraisers so far. Emily gave me an update today and said we raised over $550 in one week for the orphanage!!

You can continue to support the orphanage (and get great jewelry) - she's creating a long-term account for us so that the commission from any sales done on her site where the shopper lists Hope for Little Angels of Haiti as the hostess will go straight to the orphanage.

Please feel free to copy the information below - put it on your own blog - send it out to your friends in email - rent a carrier pigeon - post it on Facebook - tattoo it on... well... maybe we won't go there. The point is, PLEASE tell everyone you know about it.

Great jewelry AND you help the kids. You can help us continue to raise
money towards our goal by:
1) Placing an order at www.liasophia.com/emilym and entering “Hope” as the hostess’s first name and selecting “Hope for Little Angels of Haiti” as the hostess. 30% of each sale will be donated.
2) Booking your own lia sophia show with me. (Emily's contact info is below)
3) Have a friend place an order or book a show.

Updates

Brent's home and doing well. Like another adoptive mommy said - it's practically "McSurgery" these days. You drive through, have your appendix removed and get a side of fries and you're on your way.

He's having some pain but that's to be expected given that he just had foreign objects exploring his abdominal cavity yesterday. All in all he's doing really well. Thanks for your thoughts and kind words.

I mentioned the lia sophia fundraiser that my childhood friend is doing for the orphanage. If you're from out of town or if you won't be able to be there, let me share some info.

Look Great. Feel Great.

Helping has never been more fun!

You are invited to join us for a personalized lia sophia jewelry shopping experience. 30% of all sales will go to Hope for Little Angles of Haiti. Bring a friend and come help us reach our goal of raising enough money to purchase a generator for the orphanage.

Fundraising Updates

I don't think I remembered to tell you about fellow adoptive mommy, Julie. Last week, Julie had a fundraising dinner for their adoptive process. They are adopting three beautiful brothers from Haiti. As part of her efforts, Julie ordered a dozen of our T-shirts and resold them at her dinner. So she made a donation to our O, and then used the product to raise money for her own adoption! Very thoughtful and clever!

She posted today about their "Mr. Pig" fundraiser - they've placed piggy banks in local businesses with information about their boys so that people can put in some change if they feel inspired to help.

Another adoptive mom from our O is doing a "pennies by the inch" effort to raise money for the orphanage. If you're not familiar with "pennies by the inch" here's a brief synopsis. A local children's hospital uses to raise funds. Primary Children's Medical Center does a lot of research into birth defects and provides a lot of charity care to ill children. I can remember the "Pennies by the Inch" drives in our elementary schools when I was a little girl. The idea was that you donate one penny for every inch of your height - as kind of a remembrance that you were born healthy and then those pennies are were used to research and provide medical care to other kids that weren't born healthy. Every kids can grasp that. It's easy to come up with some spare change, and it was fun as a kid to figure out my height and count out the pennies. I've always been tall, so that was one of the few moments that made it worth always needing to stand on the back center of the class picture! So this mom is taking the concept and adapting it to help the kids help other kids that don't have families to live with. I think it's fabulous!

The biggest fundraiser idea for our orphanage is one that I'm SO VERY EXCITED ABOUT!! If you're a regular reader, you remember when I was reunited with my childhood best friend, Emily a few months ago. Emily came to me with a way that she wants to help our kids to get a generator. Emily is an area advisor with lia sophia jewelry. People will host parties where guests can order this fun jewelry and Emily does a short presentation about the product. So here's where this gets amazing.

Emily has agreed to come up here (she now lives several hours away) and help us do some parties and Emily will donate her ENTIRE COMMISSION from all the sales to the orphanage. That works out to about 30% of the each sale! She'll also set up some web links for us so that people that are out of state can order product and the commission will still go to our orphanage. April is also a special discount month for lia sophia, so if you buy two items at full price you four more items at half price (the half price items are always the highest price items, as opposed to what you usually see where the half price items are the cheapest items.) So you can find a friend, and go in together and get some fabulous and unique pieces and you'll be helping the best little orphanage on the planet at the same time!! You could plan now for Christmas and get some great deals! Mother's Day is right around the corner!

It's so amazing to me that Emily offered to do this all on her own. It had seriously been years since we'd seen one another. It goes to show what a fabulous person she is. She's so excited to help our kids to have power.

We're going to be doing a few parties the week of April 9th. Watch for updates and web links as it gets closer!

Thank you to everyone who is working and praying to get these kids home and keep them fed and healthy in the meantime!

Been There - Done That - Had the T-shirts Made...

Well, Brent found a company to make our silk-screened T-shirts for us. ABC-Tees made the first batch and they look GREAT! The colors are perfect and the print is clear and sharp. They were wonderful to work with and Brent had nothing but good things to say about Cort at ABC-Tees. If you're ever in the market for custom silk screening, we highly recommend them. Thanks to Colleen for recommending them to us!

I still need to post them on the Etsy store (trying to figure out if I can get away with that - we're kind of bending the rules of what Etsy was intended to be, I think).

We only have adult sizes right now, mostly Medium, Large and X-Large. We're not sure what would be "requested" so we didn't order children's sizes at this point.

We've also nearly got all the kinks worked out of of the embroidery process. We've gone back to our friend Colleen to get a few tweaks made to the logo so that the small print will be legible when translated to thread but we should have some options in that department soon.

Thank you to all the people that are helping us pull things together to raise money for our orphanage. I wish you could see their sweet faces, but that will have to wait until we get the org website complete.
